Waiting to Break Bread

Oil Painting

20 in x 16 in

November 2025

This work draws inspiration from historical surrealist artists utilizing symbolism and silhouettes to convey meaning. The cardinal, representing family that has passed, encompasses me as I sit at the table waiting to break bread. A nearly extinguished candle and emerging skull suggest mortality. Above me, objects form a trinity suggesting a passage toward the gates of heaven. The surrounding flowers including Black-eyed Susans, Forget-Me-Nots, and Peace Lilies echo themes of remembrance, loss, and the fading of our shared humanity.
