Oil Painting on Wood
37in x 44in
May 2026
Through the Palestine Sunbird, Tala’s story and cultural connection to the land is depicted. A series of symbols are shown including the olive tree, jasmine, poppies, and grape vines. The olive tree represents peace, rootedness, and resilience in Palestinian identity. The poppy is often recognized as the flower of Palestine showing resistance, heritage, and connection to the land. The grape vine and jasmine evoke memories growing up. She stands in water with Black-Eyed Susans growing around her and a turtle (symbolizing turtle island) swimming towards her. Black-eyed susans, commonly found in the Cincinnati area, exhibit a grounding and growth in the local community.
