A protest of conventional norms and an invitation to show gratitude for the little things in life.
It Means Something to Me: Look Closer
Xavier University Student Center
March 2025
First, this is my protest against conventional norms. Going against the grain of what people try to dictate as normal and acceptable starts conversations on how we can truly be inclusive. This exhibit transcends past these walls to call you to live authentically even when it may not be what’s traditionally accepted or practiced. Having the space for collective growth and diverse idea sharing is vital to the future.
Second, this work is a way for me to show gratitude for memories I’ve formed and resources I’ve received. Each random paint stroke, fingerprint, and smudge appeared during a certain moment in my life. All these hidden impressions bring meaning and memory into my life. These surfaces served as floor protection during messy moments, Test pieces as I experimented, palettes to mix and create different colors, and more. Each mark shows an authentic and imaginative approach to life. I find value in stopping to show gratitude for the moments of experimentation and growth. Gratitude for the resources I have access to, the community support, the space to share ideas, and more. it’s vital that we continue to foster diverse and inclusive spaces that value authentic representation and visibility.
